iCloud Photos Not Downloading? 8 Fixes

iCloud photos not downloading to your iPhone or iPad? Eight fixes that actually work, from storage checks to forcing full-resolution downloads.

Why your iCloud photos won't download

You tap a photo and it stays blurry. Or a whole album never syncs to your iPad. iCloud photo downloads fail for a handful of predictable reasons: not enough free space, a setting that keeps only compressed previews on the device, a weak connection, or iCloud itself having a moment. The good news is that all of them are fixable in a few minutes.

Work through these fixes in order; the first three solve the vast majority of cases.

1. Check your free storage

iOS quietly stops downloading originals when the device is nearly full. Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage) and make sure you have at least a few gigabytes free. If you don't, offload an unused app or two and try again.

2. Turn off "Optimize iPhone Storage"

This is the big one. With Settings, Photos, Optimize iPhone Storage enabled, your device keeps small compressed versions and leaves the originals in iCloud. Anything that needs the full-quality photo, including photo frame apps and AirPlay, gets the blurry copy instead.

3. Verify iCloud Photos is actually on

Settings, your name, iCloud, Photos: Sync this iPhone must be enabled. If it's off, your device and iCloud are two separate libraries, and nothing will download no matter what else you try.

4. Get on solid Wi-Fi (and disable Low Data Mode)

Large libraries download over Wi-Fi. Check that the network works, then open Settings, Wi-Fi, tap the ⓘ next to your network and make sure Low Data Mode is off; it silently pauses iCloud syncing.

5. Turn off Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode pauses background activity, including iCloud Photos. Settings, Battery, Low Power Mode off, then plug the device in. Charging overnight on Wi-Fi is when big libraries finally finish syncing.

6. Check Apple's system status

Rarely, the problem is not on your end. Visit Apple's System Status page and look for iCloud Photos. If it's flagged, wait an hour and try again.

7. Sign out of iCloud and back in

Settings, your name, Sign Out, then sign back in. This clears stuck sync states more often than you'd expect. Your photos are safe in iCloud during the process.

8. Restart and update

The classics for a reason: restart the device, and install any pending iOS update. Photo sync bugs get fixed in point releases regularly.
