How it works

Aspect ratio is width divided by height. When a photo and a screen have different ratios, the photo either fits inside the screen with bars on two sides, or fills the screen and loses part of the image. Both depend on the same number: the smaller ratio divided by the larger one. A 3:2 photo on a 4:3 iPad, for example, covers 89% of the screen when fitted, or loses 11% of the photo when filled.

Digital Photo Frame App turns an iPad, iPhone, Mac or Apple TV into a photo frame, with Fit, Fill, Adaptive Fill and Smart Focus to handle every photo shape. See how to turn your iPad into a digital photo frame.

What aspect ratio is an iPad screen?

Most iPads are about 4:3. The iPad Air 11″ and recent iPad models are slightly wider (about 1.43:1), and the iPad mini is about 1.52:1.

What aspect ratio are iPhone photos?

iPhone cameras take 4:3 photos by default. You can also choose 16:9 or square in the Camera app.

Why do my photos have black bars on my TV?

TVs are 16:9, while most photos are 3:2 or 4:3. Fitting the whole photo leaves bars at the sides; filling the screen crops the top and bottom instead.
