Frameo vs Aura vs Skylight: Which Photo Frame?

Frameo, Aura and Skylight compared on price, subscriptions, Google Photos and iCloud, video and offline use, plus when an iPad you already own is the better choice.

Aura, Skylight and Frameo are the three names most people compare when they shop for a digital photo frame. They solve the same problem in different ways, and the right one depends on how your family takes and shares photos. Here is a plain comparison, with every fact taken from the makers' own pages (checked October 6, 2026, links at the end). I make an iPad photo frame app, so I've also included that option, and I'm explicit about when a dedicated frame is the better buy.

The short answer

  • Aura if your family keeps photos in Google Photos or iCloud and you want them to appear on the frame automatically, with no subscription.
  • Skylight if relatives should send photos by email without installing anything, and a touchscreen frame matters to you.
  • Frameo if you want the cheapest frame, free clock and weather, and a frame that works without Wi-Fi.
  • An iPad you already own if you'd rather not buy hardware, your family uses iPhones, or you want photos from a NAS, Immich or the Files app.

Aura

Aura makes the most polished frames of the three and charges no subscription: storage is unlimited and included. Its standout feature is automatic album sync. Connect a Google Photos album, or add an album (including an iCloud shared album) from your phone's photo library, and new photos show up on the frame without anyone sending them. Google Photos albums sync photos only, not videos, and Aura caps synced Google albums at 45,000 photos.

Things to know: frames start at $143 and the 15" Walden lists at $299. Setup needs a smartphone, the Aura app and an Aura account. Frames have a touch bar instead of a touchscreen. Aura says the frame must stay on Wi-Fi, and its help articles disagree about what happens when the connection drops. Aura also doesn't document a clock or weather display.

Skylight

Skylight's strength is how easy it is for relatives: every frame has its own email address, so grandparents and cousins can send photos without an app or an account. The owner can switch the frame to approve new senders first. The frames are touchscreens, and Gift Mode lets you load photos before you hand it over.

Things to know: Skylight Plus ($39/year) adds remote settings, albums, cloud backup and TV mirroring. Skylight's own pages contradict each other on whether video and captions on the Frame 2 need Plus, so check before you buy. Photos are stored on the frame (8 or 16 GB) and the oldest are replaced when it's full. Skylight doesn't document Google Photos or iCloud syncing, or a clock and weather display.

Frameo

Frameo isn't a frame brand: it's the app inside many inexpensive frames from different makers, usually $50 to $130. The free tier is generous: clock, date and weather, one synced calendar, and 15-second videos. It's also the only one of the three that works fully without Wi-Fi; you only need Wi-Fi to receive new photos and updates. Photos are encrypted from phone to frame.

Things to know: family members send photos through the Frameo app after entering a code from the frame, which lasts 12 hours. There's no email or web upload, and no album sync: from Google Photos or iCloud you share photos a few at a time (10 per send on the free plan). Frameo+ ($16.99/year) raises that to 100 and allows 2-minute videos. Screen and build quality depend on the brand you buy.

Or use an iPad you already own

If there's an iPad in a drawer, it may already be a better screen than these frames, and the Digital Photo Frame App turns it into one. It works with iPads on iOS 12 or later, as well as iPhone, Mac and Apple TV. Family members add photos to an iCloud Shared Album and they appear on the frame while the slideshow runs. You can also show folders from the Files app (iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive), an Immich server or a NAS, with transitions, music, and on-screen weather, time and calendar. Our guide shows how to turn your iPad into a digital photo frame step by step, and iPad vs dedicated photo frames goes deeper on that choice.

When a dedicated frame is the better buy: if your family lives in Google Photos and wants albums to update by themselves, Aura does that and we can't, because Google only lets apps like ours use photos you pick by hand. If relatives don't have Apple devices and should send photos by email, Skylight is simpler. If you don't have a spare iPad, a Frameo frame costs less than a new one.
