5 Clever Ways to Reuse an Old iPad
Got an old iPad gathering dust in a drawer? Here are five clever ways to give it a second life, from a beautiful digital photo frame to a kitchen recipe station, security monitor, reading device, and bedside clock.

5 Clever Ways to Reuse an Old iPad
Be honest, how many old iPads are sitting in drawers around the world right now?
If you're anything like me, you probably upgraded years ago with every intention of finding a use for the old one. Instead, it gets tucked away "just in case" and quietly collects dust.
When Digital Photo Frame App first launched almost 10 years ago, the idea was simple: to turn an old iPad into a beautiful digital photo frame for the home. It seemed like the perfect second life for a device with a great screen that was still working perfectly.
Over the years, though, I realized the app had become something much more meaningful.
As my parents have gotten older, the thing they treasure most isn't another gadget or another app to learn. They simply want to see photos of their grandchildren.
Every day I add new photos to my photo stream, and within moments they appear automatically on the old iPad sitting in my parents' living room. They don't have to download anything, remember passwords, or ask for technical help. They simply glance over and see the latest adventures of the kids.
That's still the feature I love most about it.
Sometimes the best technology isn't the newest. It's the one you already own.
If you've got an old iPad lying around, here are five great ways to give it a second life.
1. Turn It Into a Digital Photo Frame
This one had to be first.
An old iPad has a beautiful display that's perfect for showcasing family photos. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on a new digital frame, you can transform a device you already own into something that keeps your favourite memories on display.
Whether it's photos of your children, grandchildren, pets, holidays or special occasions, there's something wonderful about seeing those moments throughout the day instead of leaving them buried in your camera roll.
And if your family lives in different cities, or different countries like mine, automatically updating photos can help everyone stay connected without anyone needing to be "good with technology."
2. Create a Kitchen Recipe Station
Cooking with a cookbook balanced against a fruit bowl is officially a thing of the past.
An old iPad makes a fantastic kitchen companion. Prop it up on a stand and use it to display recipes while you cook or bake. No more unlocking your phone every few minutes with flour-covered hands or trying to remember which ingredient comes next.
It's especially fun when cooking with kids. They can read each step, tick off ingredients, and even choose the next recipe together without everyone crowding around one tiny phone screen.
3. Use It as a Home Security Monitor
If you already have smart security cameras, an old iPad can become a dedicated monitoring screen.
Instead of constantly opening and closing apps on your phone, you can leave your camera feed displayed in the kitchen, home office, or near the front door. It's a simple way to keep an eye on deliveries, pets, or who's at the front gate.
It also works well as a baby monitor display if your camera system supports live viewing.
4. Turn It Into a Reading Device
Reading on an iPad is surprisingly comfortable.
With adjustable font sizes, dark mode, and screen brightness controls, it's easy on the eyes, especially for evening reading.
Whether you enjoy novels, magazines, newspapers or cookbooks, an old iPad makes a great dedicated reading device. And because it's not your primary device, you're less likely to get distracted by notifications every few minutes.
5. Make It Your Bedside Clock
Trying to spend less time on your phone before bed?
Move your phone across the room and let your old iPad take over.
With a bedside clock app, your iPad becomes an easy-to-read clock, alarm, weather display, and even a gentle wake-up screen. It's a simple way to check the time during the night without immediately falling into the rabbit hole of emails, social media, or late-night scrolling.
Sometimes the Best Technology Is the One You Already Own
Technology moves quickly, but that doesn't mean every device has reached the end of its life.
Sometimes the best technology isn't the newest. It's the one you already own.
So before recycling that old iPad, think about the memories it could display, the recipes it could help you cook, the books it could help you read, or the peace of mind it could provide around your home.
You might discover it's still one of the most useful devices you have.
Tell us other ways you use your old iPad. We'd love to hear from you.
